数学用語と解説

項、係数

• The terms of an expression are the parts of the expression that are added together.
  式の項とはたし合わされる式の一部のこと。
• The numerical part of a term with a variable is called a coefficient.
  変数を伴う項の、数字の部分を係数と呼ぶ。
• A term without a variable is called a constant.
  変数を伴わない項を定数と呼ぶ。

文字式を計算する

• Like terms are terms that have identical variable parts.
  同類項とは変数の部分が同じ項のこと。
• Simplifying Expression:
  式の簡単化[式の計算]：
  • You can simplify an expression by combining like terms.
    同類項をまとめることで式を簡単化できる。
  • To combine like terms, use the Distributive Property to add or subtract the coefficients.
    同類項をまとめるには、分配法則を使って係数を加えるかひく。
  • An expression is in simplest form when it has no like terms and no grouping symbols.
    式は同類項やグルーピング記号がない時、最も簡単な形となる。

    The result is the same.
    和に、ある数をかける、または和の各項に、ある数をかけた後、加えることができる。

TIPS

日本の試験でたまに見かける「計算しなさい」はよく考えると曖昧です。
海外だと「簡単」の内容が明示（かっこなし、同類項なし）され、演習では「簡単にしなさい」と明確です。

なお「係数」は、主役の「文字」と一緒にその式のValue(値・価値）を作り出すという意味らしいです。
